Are you holding a party and need a fabulous fancy dress costume or have you been invited to a party and you want to make a statement with your outfit. It can be hugely enjoyable and very affordable to create a fantastic fancy dress costume if you have some ideas to help you.

Think of a Theme

This could be a favourite movie, television series, children’s book, cartoon, toy, fairy tale, era or anything that you really like. When you’ve thought of your theme go ahead and think about the characters that might be included in that theme.

One of the first things to think about is whether there are quite a few different costumes to be created from characters within the chosen theme? Then think about whether the costumes within the theme are easy to re-create? Will many people know the story well enough to think of a good costume?

Not many people want to go and spend lots of money on a fancy dress costume, as chances are it will only get worn once, so it’s fairly important to choose a theme that is easy to make affordable costumes for.

It is possible to create an affordable costume by using your own clothes and a few items borrowed from friends or family or have a look round the charity shops for cheap items.

You can also search the internet for used costumes, or budget costumes if you prefer something not worn by anyone else, as there are some fantastic ones out there you just have to look.

Make it Comfortable

The last thing you want to be at a party is uncomfortable so try your costume on beforehand and make sure it’s comfortable. Dance around at home as if you’re on the dance floor to check out the movement available.

It’s a good idea to check that you can easily eat or drink as well as there’s nothing worse than getting to a party and realising you can’t! If your outfit has a mask or a headpiece check before you go to the party that it is possible to drink and eat comfortably while wearing it.

If you like making clothes you could make your own costume but if your idea of fun is just to accessorise you can really make an outfit look fabulous in this way too. It’s fantastic fun to get ready with friends or family before a fancy dress party as that way you can all travel together in your costumes.

Accessories are probably the most important part of any fancy dress costume. An affordable costume will become an amazing costume and look like you’ve spent a lot more than you have with the help of a few accessories.

You can add accessories to any fancy dress outfit to make it look amazing rather than average.

Accessories really look like you’ve made an effort and paid attention to the detail of your character. Pretty much all accessories are available to buy on the internet so whatever costume you decide on you can make it fabulous with only a little extra effort.
